Module Four, Pt 1: The Festal Icon of the Annunciation - Hanging around with Angels

We will begin a journey into the wonders of the festal icons.

These form a particular category of icons that focus on the critical events of our Lord’s life and Passion. Our journey will focus on the Annunciation, but we will approach it slowly and in a way that it will act as a gateway to a deepening of your knowledge of iconography more generally.

This will address the issues raised when painting scenes and more complicated compositions in the next part of the Module. In this first Module the focus will be on a standing angel, as in the Annunciation. We will look more closely at hands and feet, as well as posture, angel wings, hair and of course garments.
